The following information are FAQs for our 2018 trip. We have left these common questions here as a helpful resource for planning purposes, but this information may not be the same for our 2020 trip. Visit our Italy page to be included on the email list when 2020 details are released!
Common Questions about the Inaugural June 2018 Italy Trip
WHEN ARE THE TRIP DATES?
The first trip takes place June 5-21, 2018, for 2 weeks. Future trip dates will be published in our catalog published in 2020!
WHERE WILL THE TRIP GO EXACTLY?
The trip for June 2018 will take place in Italy. Our home base will be located in Orvieto, Italy, which is a small town one hour north of Rome. During the trip, we will visit Rome, Florence, Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast and a few small towns in the countryside of Umbria and Tuscany.
For future trips, we are planning for Italy, Spain, France and our partner country, Africa which is where our Global Impact trips will take place.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
The inaugural June 2018 trip includes roundtrip international airfare departing New York JFK. It also includes in-country transportation to and from 3 major cities, access to museums, tours and excursions, lodging, most meals, cultural studies curriculum (which includes language instruction) and your choice of an entrepreneurship or STEM curriculum.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED?
The inaugural June 2018 Italy trip does NOT include airfare to and from New York City, NY (JFK), passport costs, trip insurance and spending money.
We will provide a link to our accepted trip participants where discounted travel insurance can be obtained.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS?
For our inaugural June 2018 trip, all interested participants must complete an application by the application deadline (February 15). Early registration with the $300 credit incentive expires February 8 — keep that in mind. Our acceptance notices will be sent no later than February 20 and upon that date, the initial **non refundable** trip deposit of $400 will be due upfront.
Upon acceptance, it is important to apply for a passport immediately. Please read below for more IMPORTANT INFORMATION on Passports.
Young ladies 16+ are encouraged to apply.
It is important for trip participants to apply for a US Passport immediately. It takes 4-6 weeks to process without any hiccups, and if there are any delays, we want to prepare in advance for that. We’ll be available for any questions, and you can also direct questions to the U.S. Passport agency.
***VERY IMPORTANT*** If the GIRLGO member is a minor, BOTH PARENTS must approve the passport, if it is not already obtained. Additionally, BOTH PARENTS must sign a travel waiver that permits their child to travel internationally with GIRLGO and GEMS. This is a requirement by the U.S. Passport agency and U.S. Department of Travel, as well as any foreign country we enter: adults other than the parent of a minor must carry signed permission that we have permission to travel internationally with the minor. If the girl’s primary parent has physical and legal custody to make decisions without the other parent, the two-parent signature for the passport application and the travel waiver is not required. (Such cases for a single-parent signature would be that the second parent is deceased or estranged, the primary parent has a court-ordered designation to make sole discretion for travel, the other parent is incarcerated, etc.) If you have questions, please email us at email@example.com.
WHAT IS PLANNED FOR THE TRIP?
For the inaugural June 2018 Italy trip, you can see the sample itinerary HERE.
Members can choose between our two trip types: Intro to Global Entrepreneurship or Intro Global STEM. We will visit several museums, take several tours, explore on our own (with adult supervision — ALWAYS), eat amazing local foods, learn language and apply everything we’ve learned to the program you have selected.
WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?
Safety is our number one priority and everything we plan, we plan it with health and safety in mind. First, it is important to obtain trip insurance from our preferred provider — details available in the Welcome Kit OR you may have your own preferred provider (say the company who insures your house, car or healthcare). Second, it is good to know that we will embark upon day trips to Rome, overnight stays in Florence and the Amalfi Coast and visit small towns in the countryside. Some journeys will be made via our private air-conditioned coach, and some trips will be on the regional train, for the authentic Italian experience. We always travel together, eat together, live together and enjoy these amazing experiences together.
Traveling to another state, let alone another country, seems like a big step, and it is. But there is strength and safety in numbers; as well as merit in our leadership. Our director, Victoria, has traveled internationally for over a decade, and lives in Italy. Our partnering director, Saki Milton of The GEMS Camp, lives abroad as well. We are seasoned and will take all precautions to ensure safe practices. This trip will include at least 7 GirlGO members and 3 adult travel chaperones. We will also live in a small, quaint hilltop town called Orvieto. It is outside the major cities, but easy access to the places we want to go. Learn More about Orvieto
In the event of a medical emergency, there is a hospital less than 5 miles away from our hometown and as a tourist in the country, you will be handled with urgent care at any local hospital or clinic. We’ll always keep emergency and first aid kits available. Finally, any illnesses will be handled immediately with over the counter or prescription antibiotics.** All local hospital and general policies will be in the Welcome Kit our members receive.
For parents, all emergencies will be reported immediately. If it is in the best interest of the girl to return home for any reason, we will see to it that she is escorted by GirlGO staff, and safely boards a flight back home.
Parents will have constant access to the directors, via phone, email and video communication.
HOW DO I PAY FOR THE TRIP?
We have made a convenient schedule for trip payments that our girls will receive upon acceptance. General ‘good to know’ things are:
- Early registrants will receive a $300 immediate credit to their trip fund.
- The initial deposit is due by February 23 of at least $400. This amount is not refundable.
- We do have payment plans set up to make payments each month.
- Payments can only be made via check, ACH, cash or bank transfer/wire. (You can set up a bill pay with your bank for GIRLGO or GEMS. Ask us how.)
- Girls and their family can take advantage of our Fundraising Kit which has amazing and easy-to-use tools for raising funds for your trip.
- You are welcome to pay for your trip up front, in full.
What if I get accepted, but cannot pay the deposit?
It is very important to know upfront before submitting your application that a minimum $400 deposit is due upon acceptance. The acceptance of a member is the non-acceptance of another potential member. So we want to ensure that we are not taking the space from someone else who would like to go. Have a discussion with your family and friends about what is possible, and ask us questions too. We can help you fundraise money to go on the trip. Contact us to explore possibilities. We’re here to help you to have an amazing experience!
Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and Victoria, our director or Sarah, our manager will respond asap.
You can also send a message or post a comment/question on our Facebook page.
We are planning three info-sessions on Facebook Live on the following dates. Ask all the questions you may be wondering and hear from the directors of the program on the mission and vision of the organization!
- Our info sessions will begin in April!
