Common Questions about the Summer in Italy 2020
WHEN ARE THE TRIP DATES?
The trip takes place June 2-16, 2020.
WHERE WILL THE TRIP TAKE US EXACTLY?
The Summer Italy experience 2020 will take place in Italy. Our home base will be located in Orvieto, a small town one hour north of Rome, in central Italy. During the trip, we will visit Rome, Naples, Sorrento/Amalfi Coast and a few small towns in the countryside of Umbria and Tuscany (Civita di Bagnoregio and Cascata delle Marmore).
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
The trip cost of $3300 will include roundtrip airfare from Newark, New Jersey, airport transfer from Rome (FCO) to Orvieto and back, in-country transportation (regional trains and buses, private motor coaches and local transits), lodging in Orvieto and during our weekend trip to southern Italy, all breakfast and dinner meals (with the exception of meals on free days), access to tours, excursions and learning courses, 2 university visits, GO Kit, Fundraising Kit and project materials.
WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED?
The trip cost does NOT include airfare to and from Newark, NJ (EWR), passport costs, mandatory full coverage trip insurance and spending money.
We will provide a link to our accepted trip participants where discounted travel insurance can be obtained.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS?
All interested participants must complete a membership application by the application deadline (November 1, 2019). Application fees are due upon submission in the amount of $100 and this amount is non-refundable, however will count towards your trip cost. Early registration with the $50 credit incentive will be active September 1 to September 15. Interviews will take place between November 5-12. Acceptance letters will be sent no later than November 15.
Upon acceptance, it is important to apply for a passport immediately, if you have not already applied, or already own a passport. Please read below for more IMPORTANT INFORMATION on Passports.
Young ladies 14+ are encouraged to apply.
It is important for trip participants to apply for a US Passport immediately. It takes 4-6 weeks to process without any hiccups, and if there are any delays, we want to prepare in advance for that. We’ll be available for any questions, and you can also direct questions to the U.S. Passport agency.
***VERY IMPORTANT*** If the GIRLGO member is a minor, BOTH PARENTS must approve the passport, if it is not already obtained. Additionally, BOTH PARENTS must sign a travel waiver that permits their child to travel internationally with GIRLGO and GEMS. This is a requirement by the U.S. Passport agency and U.S. Department of Travel, as well as any foreign country we enter: adults other than the parent of a minor must carry signed permission that we have permission to travel internationally with the minor. If the girl’s primary parent has physical and legal custody to make decisions without the other parent, the two-parent signature for the passport application and the travel waiver is not required. (Such cases for a single-parent signature would be that the second parent is deceased or estranged, the primary parent has a court-ordered designation to make sole discretion for travel, the other parent is incarcerated, etc.) If you have questions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT IS PLANNED FOR THE TRIP?
The Summer in Italy experience 2020 plans and sample itinerary can be reviewed HERE.
Members can choose between three programs: Entrepreneurship, Finance or Technology. We will visit several museums, take several tours, explore on our own (with adult supervision — ALWAYS), eat amazing local foods, learn language and apply everything we’ve learned to the program you have selected.
WHAT ABOUT SAFETY?
Safety is our number one priority and everything we plan, we plan it with health and safety in mind. First, it is important to obtain trip insurance from our preferred provider — details available in the Welcome Kit OR you may have your own preferred provider (say the company who insures your house, car or healthcare). Second, it is good to know that we will embark upon day trips to Rome, overnight stays in Florence and the Amalfi Coast and visit small towns in the countryside. Some journeys will be made via our private air-conditioned coach, and some trips will be on the regional train, for the authentic Italian experience. We always travel together, eat together, live together and enjoy these amazing experiences together.
Traveling to another state, let alone another country, seems like a big step, and it is. But there is strength and safety in numbers; as well as merit in our leadership. Our director, Victoria, has traveled internationally for over a decade, and lives in Italy. Our partnering director, Saki Milton of The GEMS Camp, lives abroad as well. We are seasoned and will take all precautions to ensure safe practices. This trip will include at least 7 GirlGO members and 3 adult travel chaperones. We will also live in a small, quaint hilltop town called Orvieto. It is outside the major cities, but easy access to the places we want to go. Learn More about Orvieto
In the event of a medical emergency, there is a hospital less than 5 miles away from our hometown and as a tourist in the country, you will be handled with urgent care at any local hospital or clinic. We’ll always keep emergency and first aid kits available. Finally, any illnesses will be handled immediately with over the counter or prescription antibiotics.** All local hospital and general policies will be in the Welcome Kit our members receive.
For parents, all emergencies will be reported immediately. If it is in the best interest of the girl to return home for any reason, we will see to it that she is escorted by GirlGO staff, and safely boards a flight back home.
Parents will have constant access to the directors, via phone, email and video communication.
HOW DO I PAY FOR THE TRIP?
Although applications open September 1, 2019, we have published the trip information exactly one year in advance, in order for you to obtain your passport, save and prepare to spend your summer in Italy! If you plan for the year, the $3300 trip cost would amount to about $300 per month for 11 months. (The trip cost must be paid in full no later than May 1, 2020.)
An initial application and membership fee of $100 is due upon submission of your application. Upon acceptance, the remaining deposit fee of $400 is due within 2 weeks of receiving your acceptance letter. Afterwards, you can participate in our convenient payment plan schedule, paying on your trip each month until the pay off date!
What if I get accepted, but cannot pay the deposit?
It is very important to know upfront that your application requires a $100 application fee due upon submission, and a minimum $400 remaining deposit is due within 2 weeks of acceptance. The acceptance of a member is the non-acceptance of another potential member. So we want to ensure that we are not taking the space from someone else who would like to go. Information about scholarships will be available September 1, 2019 as well. Take a look to see if you qualify! Have a discussion with your family and friends about what is possible, and ask us questions too. We can help you fundraise money to go on the trip. Contact us to explore possibilities. We’re here to help you to have an amazing experience!
Email us at email@example.com and Victoria, our director or Sarah, our manager will respond asap.
You can also send a message or post a comment/question on our Facebook page.
